It has been a week of promotions for the city, with 19 officers elevated to new roles.

ATLANTIC CITY — The sun shone on the Police Department this week, with dozens of its members and their families and friends turning out for three outdoor promotion ceremonies despite the heat.

First it was Ernest Jubilee’s turn. After 27 years in the department, he was promoted to the rank of deputy chief Wednesday. He will supervise the Investigations section of the department.

On Thursday, nine new captains were sworn in. Wearing business suits, they faced a crowd that half-filled the small stadium at the Korean War Memorial on the Boardwalk and accepted new police badges.

The program was repeated Friday, when nine new sergeants took oaths of office

Police Chief Arthur Snellbaker and Mayor James Whelan were among those who addressed the honorees and the audiences.

“There is no honor more precious than leading other people during danger,” Snellbaker told the new sergeants Friday after offering his congratulations. “Don’t ever forget, a moment’s mistake can cost someone their life.”

A new captain and a new sergeant spoke on behalf of their colleagues.

“We will accept the challenge,” Sgt. Kenneth Brown said Friday. “That’s what we accepted when we took this test. We’re going to do the best we can, and we’re going to enjoy ourselves, too.”

“We look forward to serving the city and the visitors who come here,” Capt. William Burke said Thursday.
